Hi. I'm Vex, otherwise known as AoAlfaric. I'm the CE-... Main character at NSFO 😎 I'm not a professional in any of the sanitized ways. Don't expect these answers to be :D My Ardron realm is Grimlowe πŸ‘‰πŸ˜ŽπŸ‘‰ I'm going to split this into... general Dev questions. and then some "Get to know me" questions c: ENJOY!
~Dev Questions~
What got you into game development?
Oh damn, this is a story. gonna get real personal real fast. So. I always thought I'd be a video game TESTER. because... I wanted to "fix" games. Turns out I'm doing just that... Fixing games. Just by....... making my fucking own. So basically my lifes been real hell up to like... ok it never stopped BUT. i never had *time* to sit down and work on games. Until I was homeless (a choice of mine, better than living with my parents tbh. Awful people.) I had all the time, but no technology to do so. So... Notebooks and pencils it was. This was around the time Ardron was created. It wasn't even a game. Just kind of a safe space 🀨? like i said long story. BUT yeah. That. And then through the years shit went down. I found out that making Arcane Titans was going to be hell so... Digital time. :V Programmer now.
What's your favorite part of making games?
You ever like half assedly throw a piece of trash away, and it bounces off 18 things, and STILL makes it in the fuckin trashcan? Yeah. That. I'll make one mechanic or system. Go to fuckin work on something COMPLETELY unrelated, and it just... it's already slotted in, and it works. just me with changing 1 character in a line of code. Dumb. I love it. But it aint even that. The journey is hella worth more than the end goal.
What's your least favorite part of making games?
Data entry. fuck copy pasting things that already exist, and changing the format its in. I hate it.
What games have influenced the way you design games?
Aw FUCK. Shit dude I don't know. UHHHHHHHHHHHH there isn't one. dude my game design is fuckin weird. AoA has over 200 inspirations that have nothing to do with AoA. I stole a mechanic from Dead By Daylight....and put it in a TTRPG 🀨 do youknow how bizzare that is? Each game is a carefully crafted frankenstiens monster of an amalgam. I mean you could look at Arcane Titans and go "obviously thats obviously inspired by Magic:The Gathering" or look at Ashes of Arcanum and go "yeah, it's inspired by D&D", but that's such a cop out. I could say Graces Lament is inspired by castlevania, but its more the *feeling* of Castlevania. not any specific mechanics. Idk. Thats a hard question :v
What's your general philosophy when designing a game?
1. Take cool idea 2. compare it agains the universes lore.  2a. Does it make sense in the lore? β†’ if yes: Move onto 3, If not: Scrap that shit. 3. Does it fit the game genre?  3a. Objectively? If no: scrap, If yes: move to 3b  3b. Subjectively? Will a majority people like this addition? If yes: move to 4, if no: move to 3c.   3c. ok. Fuck people. Will a niche group of people appriciate this idea? If no. Scrap it. If yes. Move to 4. 4. What systems does it interact with?   4a. After determining what it interacts with. consider work load. If its massive. scrap, if its not move to 5. 5. Temper priority. move to 5a  5a. what needs done first before implementation? the answer to this might affect 4a. re-evaluate at implementation time. if its high priority. move to 6. else. wait for re-evaluation. 6.If this was implemented. Would taking it out of the game make the game actively worse?  6a. If yes, Keep it, Move to 7. If no. reconsider. go back to 3. 7. put cool idea into game.
What makes a game good to you?
Well that's just impossible to answer. What is "good"? Is it fun? Yeah. Games like Remnant are fun, but is it "Good"? fuck no. Is it competent/consistant? yeah? Then it's probably like a fuckin video game spreadsheet. no thanks. I need a game i can get immersed in, but doesn't waste my time. A game that challenges me intellectually, but isn't just trying to be smart. A game that respects my effort, but doesn't let me become so overpowered that i might as well be playing with cheats. that is a very small number of games.
What's something you're weirdly picky about when designing games?
Well if my general philosophy wasn't any fucking indication. uh. ....... EVERYTHING?
What's a game mechanic or design trend you can't stand?
Well one. Copying games without improving them. Did we really need 500 compies of vampire survivors? Do we really need 194351 "totally not D&D 5e" TTRPG's on drivethruRPG? no. Stop it. Get some help. A mechanic? Mixing opposite genres. A fucking racing game does not need TCG mechanics god damnit quit it.
What's a game mechanic you'll defend until the day you die?
Turn based decisions/combat. i..... i had a fucking novel that took up over 3000 pixels of height... >.> not keeping that. If you don't like/can't accept turn based? Skill issue.
Where do most of your game ideas come from?
... 🀷 beats the absolute piss out of me. I wish i could say other games, or movies or something. but nah. Like. I spun the lid off my drink and randomly had the epiphony of "...what if you could charge spells in AoA like a kamehameha" One could argue that the idea came from Dragon ball, but no that's just the analogy/reference I used to explain it. I wasn't thinking of Dragon ball. I was just fuckin thirsty, and welp. Now AoA spells are changed forever.
Do you plan everything out, or figure shit out as you go?
Yesn't
What's usually the hardest part of turning an idea into an actual game?
*Sigh* Read this and get back to me Now. Go back and read 2 answers up. about the fucking game ideas. Realize this happens 86000 times a day. Softly weep.
What's something players probably don't realize is ridiculously hard to make?
You mean besides a whole fucking video game? Correction. Making a video game is EASY. You can open youtube. copy tutorials. steal artwork*cough* use free music. shit yourself out an arcade game in a couple weeks. who cares. YOU WANNA MAKE A GAME WITH OVER SEVENTY TWO THOUSAND INTERTWINED AND INTERCONNECTED SYSTEMS WITH ORIGINAL ART, MUSIC, AND UI? fuck yourself. Making a good game is a sisyphean task. You always ask "Is it /really/ done? ...one more mechanic". and then you fucking do that, and because of all the shitheads using AI, and slop ass asset flips and bullshit on steam? Your game gets BURIED, and will get 3 wishlists until you go 90% on sale, and you'll sell one copy becuase someone saw "sex with hitler 2" and decided that was a better use of their money than some random game dev no ones heard of before. (The majority of games make less than 800$. Don't do game dev for money kids.) and no :D i'm not bitter about this. i'm just being realistic. I don't make games for money. I make them to give people experiences. Only reason I charge 10$ on steam is because if you're game is 0$ it wont get pushed by steam. so. >less people see it. 🀷
What's something you've made that you're particularly proud of?
*Gestures at everything* You see that fuckin matrix spoofed background? yeah that shit was hard. Didn't half ass it. looks random. Isn't.
What's something that seemed easy to make and turned into a fucking nightmare?
Probably all of Nullsuite I had a bunch of scripts hangin around, i figured "I'll take it seriously, combine them, and make it work better, quick week or so". HAH. shit took three fuckin months. πŸ˜’ Specially when i later found out, one program i made for it already EXISTED, so a;lskdjfl;kasjdfalks;djf.
How do you decide when a mechanic is actually done?
If its good, it's never done. If it is done, something somewhere else will make you touch it again. So it's never done.
What do you do when a mechanic sounds good on paper but sucks in practice?
... Fix it? If it wasn't a good fit in the first place. it wouldn't make it past the design philosphy 🀷 Learned that the hard way with AoA. Have a fucking implementation system.
How much do you let player feedback influence your designs?
Probably a lot. Like 🀦 gamers are fucking stupid. They can calculate how much damage they need to kill something without seeing its HP value, and get it down to the millisecond. OR Have frame perfect inputs, and with fighting game tournyments. BUT... game DESIGN? I get better game design out of my cats than most gamers. It's not due to a lack of trying, they just... usually don't understand wtf they're talking about. BUT when someone has a complaint or suggestion, I do usually listen. Like if it's a complaint...there is a pain point there somewhere, but is the complaint due to the *game*, or is it just their *preferences*. i'd say 9/10 times its preferences. Suggestions are always up the wall, usually huge time sinks, and get tossed due to the design philosphy up there 🀷 but I have had good ideas come from weird fuckin sources before so. I'm always open to it. I just don't let my brain fall out.
What's one thing you refuse to compromise on when making a game?
Well if its about Ardron Universe? Changing the lore. NOW SOME OF YOU KEEN ONES will notice the lore has changed, but that wasn't a "Change" it was a correction. Truth be told, (relating to my first answer) I've lost a lot of my notes from when i was homeless, some are in the basement Sometimes i find a notebook in a weird fuckin place, and go "OH...yeah that makes MUCH more sense" and update the lore accordingly. *COULD* I just go "yeah the old stuff is bad, were usin the new stuff now". yeah. I could, but i'm also not a little bitch, and i have some semblence of integrity. This is why i like to say "Even I don't know all the lore", because I don't. I mean I do. but i also *dont* yaknow? I know what I know to the best of my ability. If the model is updated? I update the lore thats public 🀷 oh.... and money. I won't take money to change my games/universes/works.
If time, money, and technical limitations didn't exist, what game would you make?
Bitch do i look like time, money, and technical limitations are stopping me NOW!? Fucking money got in the way of physical cards for Arcane Titans...So I turned to the free alternative. PROGRAMMING. buuuut. Did i know programming? No. So I fucking learned like 6 languages. Did I know how to do art? ehhhhhhhhhhhhhhh we'll say no. (certainly not pixel art) So I fucking learned how to do pixel art. Did I know how to make music? No. AND I STILL DON'T. BUT IM TRYIN. I aint afraid to try. That's how you learn, and get better. >:V I'm a water soul. Water doesn't stop because it hits a wall. It goes the fuck around. It finds a path.
~Personal Questions~
What's something that will instantly put you in a good mood?
BUTTS \o/ uhhh. My cat numnums for one πŸ€” ..fixing that fucking bug for two. your mom for third :D
Are you a morning person, night person, or some forbidden third thing?
dude. I had to make nullfocus have "Cycles" instead of days because my shits so inconsistant.
What's your ideal way to spend a completely free day?
:v Whats a free day? Idk what that is. Is that like a day off? people have those?
What's something people tend to misunderstand about you?
Probably me playing Devils Advocate, and saying "you're flip flopping" Nah. I'm just changing my POV, and trying to understand both sides, instead of picking the team you want me too 🀷 I get all the data(to the best of my ability), then I make a choice. I truly don't care what you want, or what your morals are. :3
What's the fastest way to become your friend?
Actually fuckin talk to me? Don't ignore me. Look I'm busy most of the time, but that don't mean I can't TALK. Lemme just finish up this line of code, and alt tab. :v gimme a min. ya know? But me being the first to message? ehhhh rough. cause i ususally have 80 other things to do, but even then I still do it time to time. Whats your excuse?
What's something you're embarrassingly sentimental about?
I think I lost everything that was sentimentally valuable to me when I was homeless :V so. UHHHH. Ardron. 🀷
What's a hill you'll die on that ultimately doesn't fucking matter?
(x) is not a good game. Replace (x) with your favorite game C:
What's something popular that you just don't understand the appeal of?
OH, well. I can link this to the previous. Skyrim :D
If you could instantly master one skill, what would it be?
MUSIC. FUCK. I know what sounds good. I can drum ...decently well enough, but MAKING music? fuck me.
If someone wanted to understand you better, what's one thing they should know?
Don't get married to the idea in your head. I'm kind of an enigma wrapped in a paradox. :V I change pretty much every week. I am constantly updating the model of VexOS. So... try to keep up?
How would you describe yourself
:D I'm your nicest asshole you could ever meet. Like a femboys butthole.
What do you do for fun?
Your mum :D UHHH drumming mostly. Everything else is an ends to a means πŸ€”
What kind of games do you like?
:v I like a lot of music games. Obvious one being GH/Rockband/CH/YARG, but other psychotic shit like Osu! too. Other than thaaat. πŸ€” Games with deep systems, but not so deep that I need to create a religion out of it. Like Metroid :D
What kind of music do you like?
🀘 Metal I play drums so it was either that or jazz. UHHHH Top 5 bands are: 1. The Black Dahlia Murder   Most Meaningful | Favorite Album | Fave to play 2. Lamb Of God 3. Bullet For My Valentine 4. Soilwork 5. Trivium Honorable mentions to: Alien Weaponry, While She Sleeps, and Amon Amarth
What are you weirdly passionate about?
>.> butts I could give a whole TEDx talk about them... Not gonna do that here.
What's something you absolutely can't stand?
Inconsistancy. If you tell me your favorite color is blue, and then you don't own a single blue item or use blue anywhere. I don't trust you :v
What's a random fact about you?
:D I've killed someone before.
What's something you're irrationally good at?
*irrationally*? ... Idk. I typically overthink everything I do to the point of...always being half decent at it.
What's something you're embarrassingly bad at?
Keyboard/Piano :D I can type at 120wpm+ with 98% accurace, but you put a fuckin musical piano on me and my fingers forget how to fucking finger.
What's your comfort game?
CH/Yarg :v can just let the sweet soothing sounds of Trevor Strnad(Rip πŸ’”) whisk me away while i break my fucking arms keeping up wiht Alan Cassidy
TL;DR
I'm basically 3 raccoons in a trench coat. A mix of Butt connoisseur, serious introspective developer, and deranged goblin πŸ‘‰πŸ˜ŽπŸ‘‰
Auli is my wife 😁 She's kind of a QA tester, emotional subjector for NFSO projects She's been a casual/lite gamer for a bit. So using her limited knowledge really helps. A lot of people don't realize how many habits you might gain from multiple years of gaming. She don't have them, so it exposes blindspots and issues a lot easier. love'er. Her Ardron realm is Eimon She isn't much of a game designer or system creator or anything like that. Aint her style. but, I still decided to ask her some dev questions I knew would apply to her. She is a Published Author and has done other things here and there.
~Dev Questions~
What makes a game good to you?
Give me a mission. I need quests, goals, and something attainable to work toward. I love being able to wander off, explore, collect things, decorate, and get completely distracted, but eventually I need that little quest marker calling me home. Give me freedom, but give that freedom a purpose.
What's a game mechanic or design trend you can't stand?
NOT BEING ABLE TO SAVE WHENEVER THE FUCK I WANT.
What's a game mechanic you'll defend until the day you die?
OPTIONS. Give me options. Let me customize my character, choose how I play, decide where I go, pick what I wear, decorate things, make choices, and generally stick my grubby little hands into the game and make it mine. Even if the choice changes absolutely nothing mechanically, I still want the choice.
~Personal Questions~
What's something that will instantly put you in a good mood?
Are you a morning person, night person, or some forbidden third thing?
Some forbidden third thing. I love the wee hours of the morning, when the world hasn't quite awakened yet. When the morning glories slowly open their petals and everything is still jeweled with dew. There's something peaceful about those hours, when the air is cool and quiet and it feels like you've caught the world before everyone else gets their hands on it. But I love the night just as much. I love the stars, the cool breeze, the darkness, and the way everything settles when the day finally lets go. I love sitting outside when the world has gone quiet and looking up at a sky that suddenly feels impossibly large. So I don't think I'm a morning person or a night person. I belong to the hours when everyone else is asleep.
What's your ideal way to spend a completely free day?
No plans. No obligations. Nowhere I have to be. I want to wake up when I wake up, have something good to drink, play games, watch something, wander outside if the weather is nice, and spend time with the people I love. The important part is getting to decide what happens next instead of the clock deciding for me.
What's something people tend to misunderstand about you?
My intensity. I feel things loudly. I love loudly, get excited loudly, get angry loudly, and sometimes I just exist loudly. That doesn't mean every emotion is a crisis or that I'm asking someone else to fix it. Sometimes I just need to feel the damn thing.
What's the fastest way to become your friend?
Be weird with me. Skip the small talk. Tell me your bizarre theory. Show me the thing you're ridiculously excited about. Send me the meme you weren't sure you should send. Let me see who you actually are instead of presenting your customer-service personality.  β€’ Bonus points if you're funny and don't require constant maintenance to remain friends.
What's something you're embarrassingly sentimental about?
Little things that have memories attached to them. A note, a stupid little trinket, a rock somebody handed me, something my kids made, some completely worthless object that reminds me of a person or a moment. Once something has a story attached to it, good fucking luck getting me to throw it away.
What's a hill you'll die on that ultimately doesn't fucking matter?
My current hill I'll die on: The entire plot of 101 Dalmatians. It could have been avoided if Roger and Anita had just lied to Cruella and told her the puppies were white. Cruella shows up asking about the puppies and their spots, and instead of using this magnificent opportunity to get that woman the fuck away from their dogs, they explain that Dalmatian puppies are born white and develop their spots later. WHY WOULD YOU TELL HER THAT? She doesn't need a lesson in Dalmatian biology. She needs misinformation. β€œTerribly disappointing, Cruella. Fifteen completely white puppies. Not a spot among them. Weirdest damn Dalmatians we've ever seen.” That's it. She loses interest. Puppies remain unskinned. Movie over. This could have been a twelve-minute film.
What's something popular that you just don't understand the appeal of?
A lot of new trends, honestly. Half the time I see something suddenly become wildly popular and my first response is just, β€œBut... why though?” Not even necessarily because I hate it. I just need someone to explain how we collectively arrived here. Sometimes I eventually understand. Sometimes I join in. And sometimes I remain standing on the shore watching everyone sail away on their weird little trend boat thinking, β€œNo, seriously. Why?”
If you could instantly master one skill, what would it be?
The violin. No hesitation.
If someone wanted to understand you better, what's one thing they should know?
I can be both. Two seemingly contradictory things can be true about me at the same time. I can love you and need space. I can be afraid and still want to try. I can be happy and still have something hurting beneath it. I feel things deeply, and those feelings don't always arrive one at a time.
How would you describe yourself
Curious, loud, sentimental, stubborn, imaginative, slightly feral, and perpetually distracted by something interesting. I love fiercely, swear recreationally, collect little bits of knowledge I'll probably never need, and somehow turn ordinary life into lore. It took me a long time to learn how to describe myself with kindness instead of immediately reaching for everything I thought was wrong with me. So if you're going to know me, know that too. Be gentle with me. I'm still learning to be gentle with myself.
What do you do for fun?
A little bit of everything. Gaming, writing, watching entirely too much television, archery, decorating and creating things, swimming, disappearing down random research rabbit holes, hanging out with my family, and occasionally deciding at an unreasonable hour that I have a New Projectβ„’.
What kind of games do you like?
β€’ Honestly, a little bit of everything. My taste in games is all over the place. I can happily go from decorating my valley in Disney Dreamlight Valley or dressing up in Infinity Nikki to dropping into Fortnite, robbing banks in Payday 2, causing problems in GTA, getting completely absorbed in Divinity, or wandering around supernatural Tokyo in Ghostwire: Tokyo, a game I have apparently decided I need to own on every available surface because I've bought the damn thing three times. I like adventure, RPGs, shooters, cozy games, open worlds, fantasy, horror, and the occasional game specifically designed to scare the absolute shit out of me. Genre matters a lot less to me than whether the game gives me something interesting to do and lets me play in a way that feels like mine.
What kind of music do you like?
My music taste is basically β€œdoes it make my brain happy?” I don't care much about genre. I'll listen to pop, rock, K-pop, old songs, new songs, instrumentals, and anything with a violin has an unfair advantage. I tend to fall in love with individual songs more than genres.
What are you weirdly passionate about?
Lore. Completely unnecessary lore. Give me the history, the weird little fact, why something is the way it is, where a tradition came from, what happened behind the scenes. I will ask a question that absolutely did not need answering and somehow emerge forty minutes later knowing the burial customs of a civilization I wasn't researching.
What's something you absolutely can't stand?
People telling me how I feel or deciding what I meant without asking me. I'm crass. I'm loud. I swear a lot, and sometimes the way I say something sounds harsher or more serious than I actually mean it. If you're unsure what I meant, ask me. Don't decide what emotion I'm having, what my intentions were, or what I β€œreally meant” and then react to that version of me. I would much rather someone say, β€œHey, what did you mean by that?” and give me the chance to clarify. Don't write my half of the conversation for me.
What's a random fact about you?
I don't have a belly button.
What's something you're irrationally good at?
Connecting completely unrelated dots. My brain collects useless little details and stores them in some unknowable filing system until, without warning, two things click together and suddenly they make sense. I couldn't tell you where I put my keys, and I certainly cannot tell you which direction is north, but I can remember one weird detail from three years ago and connect it to something we're talking about now.
What's something you're embarrassingly bad at?
Directions. I am a real-life Roronoa Zoro. I can get lost somewhere I've been a hundred times. Do not tell me β€œhead east.” Do not tell me β€œyou can't miss it.” I absolutely can, and I absolutely will. Give me GPS and pray.
What's your comfort game?
Disney Dreamlight Valley. It used to be Infinity Nikki, until updates and technology took that one away from me. DDV inherited the crown, and considering the frankly obscene number of hours I've put into it, I think it's safe to call the succession official. Hell, it's running right now.
So what the FUCK is NES+?
A weird set of limitations i set for myself when creating Ardron Universe. First you must understand ...well For the youngins. What the NES *is* If you already know what the NES is, and its limitations. Click the button.
The NES?
The NES is the Nintendo Entertainment System, a game console released by Nintendo in the 1980s. And compared to modern hardware, this thing is a fucking potato. It had an 8-bit CPU, about 2 KB of general-purpose RAM, extremely limited graphics hardware, and game cartridges that were often measured in kilobytes... not gigabytes. Developers couldn't just make whatever they wanted and throw more hardware at the problem. Every sprite, tile, color, sound, and byte of memory mattered. Those limitations are important, because NES+ starts with the question: β€œWhat if I made Ardron Universe games while deliberately obeying limitations similar to an NES?” Except... The + is where I start cheating.
NES Limitations
If the information above didn't give you an idea of its limitations... The average modern gaming PC, has enough RAM to hold the working memory of millions of NES consoles simultaneously. In raw clock speed alone, a modern multicore CPU operates on the scale of tens of thousands of NES CPU clocks at once and that's before accounting for the fact that modern CPUs accomplish vastly more per clock. So when I say the NES was limited... I mean LIMITED. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ You see all these beautiful colors and shit? Yeah. The NES can't do that. You see this block of fuck? That is every possible color you can have on the NES. No inbetweens No lights. No darks. It gets worse. You can't even USE all of them. You get 4. 4 per "sprite" Oh... And "transparant" counts as a color. so if you want transparancy? Technically 3. Go fuck yourself. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ What is a "sprite" you might ask? A sprite is basically a single image, the system can move around on screen. A character? A single sprite. Enemies? sprites Bullets,Fireballs, Effects? Alllllll sprites. A single sprite on NES is "typically" limited to a 8 pixel by 8 pixel image.
Yeah. This bitch is 16 pixels by 16 pixels. It gets worse.
This bitch is 16x32 The point is... You couldn't just make something 15x30 or 9x12 nah. It took up 8x8. and you used the space to the best of your ability. And you're probably thinking "well i'll just make a lot of sprites then?" WRONG! You can have a max of 64 sprites being produced at a time. And this fat fuckin plumber is taking up 8 already in his big form. You still have a whole level, enemies, score, coin count, all that to go. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ The NES was magic honestly. I would get into audio(i'll explain that later), but i think its time for the main attraction. The fuck is NES+?
NES... Plus?
Remember that cute little block of fuck? Mines worse. You see this, and the less colors, and go "... plus?" Yes. First off, explination. RGB + CMYK and then their opposites. (andsomeothercolorsistoleshutup) Cool. Ok. BUT with the + addition, "Brightness" is now available to play with. You can take any one of those colors, and adjust its brightness from 255 to 0. That's all allowed. BUT(T) Once you pick a color+brightness. Thats one of your choices. You can't pick purple at 75% brightness, and then purple again at 50% brightness, Nope. Thats 2 colors of a sprite. Still have to choose wisely. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Another addition. You're allowed to have 8 colors per sprite + transparancy. Transparancy doesn't count against you. SO. Shit like this is legal. It's a little janky, but I didn't want to create 4 sprites, and remember. Transparancy is free. so. technically 9 colors allowed. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ NOW as for not wanting to create 4 sprites, there is a reason. Where as the NES has a sprite limit of 64. thats cool, We use 1920x1080 screens in this year (ususally) So I have to increase the sprite limit, and increase the "8x8 pixel = sprite" size limit. It's either that or do what Blastphemous did. Smol screen resolution, blown up to 1920x1080. Nah. i'd rather do the increase in pre-production rather than making the engine do it. SO. A typical "sprite" is 32x32. I just use extra big pixels. It will be a *little* smaller. uh. Here he is btw :D and let me say. This is a concept. :D look at that lil guy That's Child Freedin. He uh... Doesn't follow the NES Plus rules, but its a concept for a paper doll. so... It will. For a better look. I booted up OldMario In 1080p and got some comparison sizes for you(andforme).
Adult freedin will be bigger >.> so. BUT ANYWAYS. due to the...nature of how Ardron Universe will go...specially with paper dolls and what not... 64 sprites on screen? NAH 192 sprites on screen 😀 suck it. Cause we do things in 3's here. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ NOW LIKE I SAID... Let's get into Audio...
So... This is FamiStudio. If you peek into the top left. There is. β€’ Square 1 β€’ Square 2 β€’ Triangle β€’ Noise β€’ DPCM That's it. You get 5 "instruments" 🀨 Square 1 and 2 are basically the melody/lead Triangle is the "bass". as its the lowest sounding note. so 🀷 And noise is usually used for Drums...snares and hihats and such. DPCM is...fuckin confusing. It takes a sound sample and can play it back at different rates, which changes the pitch basically. idk. i don't fuck with it. You cannot really do chords with FamiStudio... Well. You can. But it comes at a cost. If you try to make 2 notes take up the same space in the same "instrument", one will just overwrite the other. So if you want 2 notes playing at the same time, you need to use 2 different "instruments". You could use Square 1 for one note and Square 2 for another to make a chord... But congratulations. You just used 2 of your 5 "instruments" to make ONE chord. 🀨 So most games use Square 1 and Square 2 for different parts of the song instead, and get creative when they want something to sound like a chord. It's very primitive, but the things people did with it are pretty amazing. Go listen to NES castlevania music... Try to spot wtf is goin on. --- ANYWAYS now for the "Plus" part. The NES can't... quite do more than that honestly. It's pretyt limited. And once we get to SNES. we go to full blown fuckin MIDI instruments and such, and it gets even more wild. BUT for Ardron Universe. we "Plus" it... by Playing 2 Tracks. A track can have all 5 channels. (ahem) notes, and save that as a mp3 or whatever. Then I create another track with that one open in another window. I want a chord? I have to line that bitch up. Then in game I make both tracks play at the same time for more DEPTH.
Closing Words
So it's not quite SNES and its more than NES. ... So NES + is born. Β―\_(ツ)_/Β― One could ask. "Why the fuck are you limiting yourself?" Kid... The best things in the world came from limitations. You think the human race wouldve gotten where it had if not for technological limitations, and figuring out ways to go further? This is a homage to the NES, and everything great it did. It was the console that accelerated gaming to where it is. No one knows what the fuck the Sega Master System is. People cared about the Genesis. NES took the 8-bit gaming scene by the balls. and I intend to honor that, While meeting the inbetween πŸ˜ƒ Toodles!... I never say that.
Pup is my Husband πŸΆπŸ’š He's a wonderfully encentric type of guy His Ardron Realm Is Elusia His bark is worse than his bite. Pup is a MASSIVE gaymer. He's always playing fuckin somethin. Least when he's not working. As far as design and help goes, there isn't much. Spare for the QA he does, testing and such. Which in that case he's *very* specific. Even if not explaining it the best. Like this page of his... He said he wanted a "Platformer background"... Welp...Here ya go, love. Enjoy.
